The Phone Call That Made Me a Caregiver

In October 2023, my life changed in a single phone call.

My mother, Malinda, was hospitalized in Kentucky twice for diabetic ketoacidosis. After the second episode she couldn’t live alone, so I moved her to live with me in Atlanta while I was renovating a house.

She had diabetes plus several chronic physical and mental conditions that affected each other. I became her full-time caregiver overnight with no medical records, medication list, or local doctors. I rebuilt her medical history one call, one form, one fax at a time.

Soon she needed five specialists, a physical therapist, an occupational therapist, and a primary doctor. None of them coordinated with each other. I tracked every appointment, medication change, and follow-up. She needed care every day, so I hired home health aides — finding, scheduling, training, and trusting them when I couldn’t be there.

My notes were scattered across calendars, sticky notes, texts, voicemails, and paper files. There was no single place that held everything. My mother died in April 2025.

Caring for her showed me what families like ours need: one place that unites family, caregivers, clinicians, and care homes around a single care plan. That’s why I built Stitched.Care. If you’re overwhelmed and trying to hold it together, you’re not alone. We made this for you.
